Winemaker Focus: Clare’s Legendary Mr Mick & Tim Adams Wines

By 11 December 20172018 News

One of the Clare Valley’s must-stop destinations is, without a shadow of a doubt, Mr. Mick Wines. Steeped in history and tradition, the winery, cellar door and kitchen are named after the late K.H. (Mr. Mick) Knappstein, an Australian winemaking legend.

Proud custodians Tim and Pam Adams are the friendly faces you’ll see at the landmark property at 7 Dominic Street, Clare – the building that now bears Mr Mick’s name and houses a renowned restaurant, cellar door and gallery. Tim, and winemaker Brett Schutz, continue Mr. Mick’s philosophy of making affordable wines for everyone to enjoy introducing consumers to new and different varietals as well as crafting fine quality traditional wines.

So what makes these wines so unique?

“Mr Mick was never one to shy away from new and innovative concepts in winemaking,” says Tim. “Many of these concepts became very successful wines, well known in Australian winemaking history. We continue this philosophy, making easy-going styles of wine that create interest and satisfy many tastes.”

Over the past 6 years, the Mr. Mick portfolio has expanded into alternative varietals following recent consumer trends. The range now features Pinot Grigio, Tempranillo, Sangiovese Rose, Novo Sangiovese and Vermentino, sitting comfortably with traditional Clare Valley varieties and blends such as Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Merlot.  Introducing consumers to new and different varietals as well as crafting fine quality traditional wines is all part of the Mr Mick Wines philosophy of making wines for everyone.

We asked Tim Adams his top 3 reasons to visit the glorious Clare Valley.

“Why the Clare Valley?,” he asked. “The rural beauty, a combination of cereal farming, viticulture and livestock.

“A peaceful, quiet escape with award winning restaurants and wineries. History combined with modern charm.”

With the Clare Classic cycling event set to present the Clare Valley to thousands of cyclists and their families, Tim said he and Pam were excited to be showcasing the hidden beauty of the Clare Valley.

“Together with our acclaimed wine and food to thousands of guests who have not had the privilege to experience our region,” he said.

“Mr. Mick once said there are two types of people in the world,” Tim continued. “Those who were born in Clare and those who wished they had been … and we couldn’t agree more.”
